I  LANGUAGE SKILLS

●  I was a prolific language learner from an early age. I studied French, German and Latin through the Scottish high school system to SCE ‘Higher’ grade level. I went to Edinburgh University to study French, but switched specialisations to graduate with honours in Linguistics (1979). A year working in Germany rekindled an interest in practical language learning. I went on to earn a postgraduate diploma in Russian language at Strathclyde University (1982), and learnt Polish the following year while working as a research assistant at Warsaw University. I lived in Turkey from 1987 to 1999, where I was engaged in a number of occupations ranging from language teaching, stock exchange trading to running a translation and training business. I became highly competent in Turkish over this period and had the opportunity of proving this when I earned the Diploma in Translation from Turkish into English from the Institute of Linguists in 2000.

I have a basic reading knowledge of Dutch and an elementary conversational knowledge of Sinhalese. I can decipher the Arabic script although I have no real knowledge of this language. I understand the principles of phonetic transcription using the IPA.

II   EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS RELEVANT TO TRANSLATION

● I have been continuously involved with translation since the autumn of 1996. From 1996-1999 I was a partner in a translation and training company in Izmit, Turkey. Here I undertook both a fair share of the translation work between Turkish and English and was involved in recruiting freelancers and managing projects. I was resident in the UK from 1999-2002 when I worked as a freelance translator from Turkish and German into English. I also did a lot of public service interpreting between Turkish and English. In 2000 I established a web-based translation business of which I was the sole proprietor. Running this business gave me further experience of marketing translation services, recruiting freelancers and managing projects. The years 2002-2004 saw me teaching English in Qatar. I maintained a translation website for this period and undertook translation work in my spare time. In June 2004 I came to Cyprus where I have re-established myself as a full-time freelance translator.

RELEVANT SKILLS

Translation and interpreting

Excellent reading knowledge of the languages I translate from (Turkish and German). Able to work independently and meet deadlines. Good at researching terminology using reference materials and the Internet.

Excellent oral skills in Turkish. Considerable experience of face-to-face and telephone consecutive interpreting between Turkish and English in a public service context.

Good writing style

Able to reconstruct texts into natural-sounding English in a style appropriate to end-user needs. I translated three guidebooks from German into English in the Marco Polo series (Italian Riviera, The Netherlands and Costa del Sol, all published in 2001).

I am familiar with MS Office applications. I have designed and maintained my own websites and am familiar with HTML.

iii finance I have invested directly on stock exchanges in various countries since 1987. I earned my living as a day trader on the Istanbul stock exchange from 1993-1995. I have a good knowledge of technical and fundamental analysis, including financial statements. I have an in-depth knowledge of the Turkish economy and financial markets. I have translated a large amount of financial material. For example, I was the final proofreader for the English-language version of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange IPO prospectus.

iv  legal I have extensive experience of translating legal documents, particularly private law. Since 2006, I have undertaken a systematic study of the Turkish legal system using university legal textbooks. The areas that I have covered so far are contracts, debt recovery and bankruptcy. Employment Licences for Private Security Officers

Article 17- Applications for private security officer employment licences shall be accompanied by the following documents.

a) Photocopy of diploma,

b) (Amended wording: Official Gazette- 26/9/2009-27358) Republic of Turkey Identification Number,

c) (Repealed: Official Gazette-26/9/2009-27358)

d) Four passport-sized photographs,

e) Health report, and

f) Private security basic training certificate.

(Amended paragraph: Official Gazette- 11/9/2009-28051) Those applicants whose security investigations yield positive results shall, provided they deposit the licence fee, be given the Private Security Officer Identification Card in accordance with the sample in Annex-3/A and Annex-3B.

Arrangement may also be made for the security investigation to be conducted during private security training. In this case, the private security basic training certificate shall not be required in the course of application.

Archive research only shall be conducted into private security officers who will perform their duties unarmed.

(Amended paragraph: Official Gazette- 11/9/2009-28051) Persons who have retired from the general law enforcement agencies and the National Intelligence Agency along with persons who have, following actual employment in such positions for at least five years, resigned of their own volition shall be exempted from the private security basic training condition and the training condition laid down in sub-paragraph (b) of the first paragraph of article 10 of the Law.

(Amended paragraph: Official Gazette- 11/9/2009-28051) Graduates of security-related faculties and vocational colleges of higher educational establishments along with graduates of security-related departments of vocational colleges or faculties shall, apart from firearm training, be exempted from the private security basic training condition.

(Additional paragraph: Official Gazette- 26/9/2009-27358) (Amended: Official Gazette- 11/9/2009-28051) Arrangement shall be made for security investigations to be conducted into managers who will work at private security companies, training establishments and alarm monitoring centres. Managers whose investigation yields a positive result shall be given the identification card a sample of which is shown in Annex-3/C.

(Additional paragraph: Official Gazette- 11/9/2009-28051) Security investigations and archive research to be conducted into prospective private security officers and managers shall be repeated every five years as of the date on which the basic training certificate is issued or, with respect to the persons set out in paragraphs five and six, as of the application date. Should loss of compliance with any of the conditions applicable to private security officers and managers be detected, the identification card and employment licence shall be revoked by the Ministry/provincial governates.

The Istanbul Stock Exchange 100 National Index ended the week down by 1% at 19,187. For the index, which is in a rising wedge formation, the 19,000 level is of crucial short-term importance. If it breaks below the 19,000 level the market may turn bearish.

However, if it remains above this level buyers may return to the market. The stock exchange index is at a critical level and, if it rises out of the current range, it can be expected break through the 21,000s. This will only happen if there is a fresh injection of cash. If buying is supported by volume the uptrend may strenghten.

Pending news of an agreement with the IMF coupled with the positive sentiment from the July inflation figures may strengthen the Turkish lira against the dollar in the coming days. On the other hand, should the June trade deficit figures to be released this month turn out to be worse than expected, this will impact negatively on the markets. However, the IMF agreement, details of which are expected to become public in September, will precipitate a strong inward flow of foreign funds and thus to some extent allay concerns over the financing of the trade deficit.

Fauna

Seit 1977 sind in der Region Ligurien nicht zuletzt aufgrund hatrtnäckiger Kämpfe von Naturschützern zehn Reservate und 15 Naturparks ausgewiesen. In sie kehren nach und nach viele wild lebende Tiere zurück, die von den grossen Touristenströmen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg vertrieben und fast ausgerottet worden waren. In dem hochalpinen Teil Liguriens, etwa in den Hochtälern von Aroscia und Canaro, gibt es wieder Murmeltier und Marder, Iltis und Wiesel, Gabelhahn und Bergfasan. Da auch Klein-Nageltiere wie Eichhörnchen, Eichel- und Haselmaus sich sprunghaft vermehrt haben, fanden Greifvögel wie Bussarde, Falken und nördlich der Ligurischen Alpen sogar die Habichte wieder einen natürlichen Lebensraum. Von den kleinen Nagern ernähren sich auch die zahlreichen Reptilien, die es gibt und die manchmal dem Menschen unangenehm wereden können: Auf Vipern und Echsen, Geckos und Salamander sollte besonders der achten, der abseits der Wanderwege nach Pilzen und Blumen sucht. Einen besonderen Schrecken jagt die Schlange Colubro Lacertino Malpolon ein. Sie ist mit einer Länge von bis zu 2,50m die längste Schlange Europas. Die einst so reiche Fauna im Meer ist besonders in Küstennähe leider fast völlig verschwunden.

Fauna

Years of persistent campaigning by nature lovers finally bore fruit in 1977, when ten nature reserves and 15 nature parks were created in Liguria. Within the borders of these sanctuaries we can now witness the reappearance of many wild animals which were on the verge of extinction following the explosive increase in the number of tourists visiting the region following World War II. Now the alpine pastures of Upper Liguria, such as the high-lying valleys of the Aroscia and Canaro, are once more home to marmots and martens, polecats and weasels, partridges and mountain pheasants. The huge increase in the number of small rodents such as squirrels and different types of dormice means that the area has once more become the habitat of birds of prey like buzzards, falcons and even, to the north of the Ligurian Alps, hawks. These small rodents are also a source of food for the large number of reptiles, some of which can be a nuisance to people from time to time. If you are looking for flowers and mushrooms away from the hiking paths, you should keep an eye out for adders and lizards, geckos and salamanders. The snake colubro lacertino malpolon, with a length of up to two and a half metres – the longest in Europe – can give you a particularly nasty fright. Sadly, the once rich fauna in the sea has now almost completely disappeared, particularly close to the shore.
