Page Content

  • Get organized before you start creating your Web site. Think over its structure and get the text and all illustrations for all your pages ready.
  • When you set up your site, create only pages, for which you their content ready. A site with empty pages looks incomplete. Therefore, first create only two or three main pages and add new pages when you know exactly how they will look like.
  • Page titles are used on pages and in the site menu. Therefore, titles must be short. Check how they look like in the menu of the selected template.
  • Use text boxes to capture the reader’s attention or to highlight an interesting fact. A table with a fixed width and left-aligned text was used to create this text box.

Use text boxes to capture the reader’s attention or to highlight an interesting fact.
  • When entering text, use styles from the Format selector of the HTML editor. Styles define character formatting such as font, font size, and font style as well as paragraph formatting such as text alignment, line spacing, bullets, and indents. By using a style of the HTML editor, you can define a type of paragraph such as normal text, first level heading, second level heading, etc. Styles help improve consistency of the Web pages you are designing.
  • Use font and size options only as the last resort. It is always better to use styles for formatting your text.
  • Highlight fragments of text using B, I, and U buttons. Try to highlight only really important thoughts or main topics. If you highlighting is right, then readers who scan only your highlighted text will be able to get a good idea of what your page is about.
  • Use headings and bulleted or numbered lists to structure your text.
    • This is a bulleted text

  • It is possible to use images and lines in headings. For example:

    Use headers carefully.
  • Use pictures to enhance your pages. In most cases, one picture is enough to noticeably enhance the perception of a page.
  • Use hyperlinks in your pages. If a hyperlink points to a downloadable file, it is better to state the size of this file in megabytes. Check your links periodically to make sure they are still valid.
  • Although it is possible to create Web pages without knowing anything about HTML, we recommend you to learn HTML basics using our HTML for Translators online tutorial. Besides, if you know HTML, you will always be able to land more jobs! Translators who know HTML are in very high demand.

Pictures

  • Frame you pictures to enhance their perception by viewers. To add a thin border around a picture in the HTML editor, enter “1” into the Border box of the Image Properties page. The Image Properties page will appear in the HTML editor if you click the Insert Image button or right-click the image while using the HTML editor.
  • To adjust spacing between a picture and surrounding text, you can use margins in a picture style like in this example:

    <img src="picture_url" style="border: solid 1px #999; margin-left: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;" />

Margins can also be specified in points on the Image Properties page in the HSpace and VSpace boxes of the HTML editor.
  • Always specify the picture size by adding width and height attributes—this will ensure your page is displayed correctly even before pictures are downloaded.
  • Pictures enhance your pages. However, usually one picture per page is enough. Try not to overload your pages with pictures. If you want to put several pictures on one page, try to make one of them larger than the others.

File Formats

  • Use the JPEG format (jpg) for photographs. This format lacks transparency. However, it is possible to place an image on a compatible background.
  • Use the GIF format for small images with small number of colours and containing large areas of continuous colour. A business letter or a drawing are good examples of images that need the GIF format. GIF format allows transparency, which allows the background elements of the Web page to show through your images. For example, a logo with a transparent background can be shown on the colour background of the site heading. To get the best result, the background colour that will be set to transparent must be the same, on which the image is supposed to be placed. Otherwise, the jagged edges will be shown because the image was designed for another background colour.
  • It is possible to use also the PNG format. This format combines the advantages both GIF and JPEG formats and in addition it allows specifying any value of transparency. However this is also the drawback of this format: older browsers do not support alpha-channels that are used to provide variable opacity. All modern browsers support alpha-channels.

Editing Tips

  • Most modern browsers allow viewing pages in tabs. To open a link in a new tab, press and hold Ctrl, then click the link.
  • When editing your information, open links only in new tabs or new windows. If a link is opened in the editing window, the information you entered may be lost. Before opening any links, always save your data. It is a good idea to always press Ctrl + C to save your data into the clipboard before saving a page. If something goes wrong, you will be able to use Ctrl + V to restore your data.
  • Do not edit one and the same page in several windows or tabs because you may lost your information. The most latest version that was last saved will be stored on the server.
  • Save your data periodically. Every Web server has a limiting time of waiting for a user’s response. A session between a server and a user is automatically ended if a session timeout has been reached. The amount of time that a session will stay alive is usually set to 20 to 30 minutes and can be different on different Web sites and even in different functions on the same Web site.

Do not leave unsaved data for more than 5 to 10 minutes. Save often!

Browser Zooming

Almost all major modern browsers have the zoom function, which allows scaling of pages and changing the font size. Zooming allows finding a font size that provides the most comfortable reading. To see how the zooming works, try to rotate the mouse wheel while pressing and holding the Ctrl key. You can also click the looking glass icon at the bottom right corner in Internet Explorer 7 and later to change the zoom level of a page you are viewing.
