I think that "failed" doesn't met the perfect equivalent as the student didn't failed or succeeded, he didn't attend the exam.

Hi Abdo, I teach in a university as well. When a student misses an exam, s(he) gets a 0. It is the same in our Arab World, and even harder, when it comes to absence. So, practically, if the student didn't attend, then the student failed.

p.s. Doesn't meet not met

subjects with a failing grade

we have ¨failing grade¨ and ¨passing grade¨

That could be used as well, though Dr. El Helw's version is shorter.

The problem is that we don't have any context for this question. Even what is put in the designated box is not context but the description of the term. So, it depends. If they have another category of failed subjects, then yes, we have to put something specific like your suggestion.

Abdo, can you help us by clearing that out?

Thanks!
