I've found the answer - these are contingent debts. In fact the cause antérieure just means that the debts "arose prior to ...." - it's the word "éventuelles" which led me in the right direction - thanks for your help

Thanks for this helpful comment - I didn't think of that, although I myself work for a company with a post service which stamps the date on all the mail we receive!
