Ukradli ji.

What is the difference between "Ukradli ji." and "Ukradli mi ji."?

Here's my attempt:

"Ukradli mi ji." -It was stolen from me.

"Ukradli ji." - It was stolen.

Is this correct?

It depends on context...

It depends on what you are talking about. Both "Ukradli mi ji" and "Ukradli ji" are in feminine - so the completely accurate translation would be something like "SHE was stolen (from me)..." However, in the Czech language things sometimes bear a feminine gender. For instance "a wallet" is SHE instead of IT. So when the whole sentence is: "The wallet was stolen from me" - than in Czech when using pronoun instead of the noun, you would say "She was stolen from". What I want to say is, that there is not 100% equation between "It was stolen (from me)" and "Ukradli ji/Ukradli mi ji". So be careful

Thank you for the clarification. Is there a more general term for "it" that would be better used in this situation, or would it be necessary to know the gender of an object to refer to it at "he"/"she"?

you would have to know the gender of the object. You must deduct it from one of the earlier sentences, for example: I had a new wallet. SHE was stolen from me... If it was a bit complex sentence, like: "I had a new wallet and a book." you could not use SHE here, as no one would know what was stolen. But on the other side, if it combined wallet and a pen (masculine), SHE would work

Well this problem does not arise when you are translating from Czech to English - all non-living objects (+animals and plants) are in English neutrum (IT) and that is also how you translate it. "Ukradli mi peněženku (The wallet was stolen from me)" = "IT was stolen from me" even though wallet is SHE in Czech. In the opposite direction (English to Czech) things are getting little more complicated because then you have to learn some rules about gender determination in the Czech language.

Thank you for the explanation. I will then explain that this particular phrase would be used only with a feminine object.

Would the following be correct if there was a masculine object?

"Ukradli on."/"Ukradli mi on."

For my purposes, it is just fine to explain a bit of grammatical gender.
