Context <p>The structure of this poem [Lamentations] is very important to our understanding of it. It is acrostic, meaning that the letters of the Hebrew alphabet in their proper order guide the writer in the development of his poem. The first word in the verse begins with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, aleph. The second verse begins with the second letter in order in the Hebrew alphabet, and so on.
