ROHANI ABDUL HAMID, PhD

Background. Dr Rohani Abdul Hamid has spent the major part of her childhood and adult life in the cosmopolitan environment of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Her rural stints were the six years spent as a practising teacher in a number of rural and semi-rural schools (Padang Serai, Baling, Kulim, Kedah; Seremban, Negeri Sembilan; from 1971 - 1975) and two years in Kuala Lumpur (1976 – 1977). She joined the Ministry of Education (MOE) as a subject matter expert in the English Language Unit of the Curriculum Development Centre (CDC) in 1979. Her competence enabled her to rise through the ranks, retiring in a top management position (JUSA C) in 2004. Her 25 years in the MOE as curriculum and management specialist (Schools Division, 1995 - 1997) have given her great knowledge and insights into Malaysian education as well as a facility in the use of Bahasa Malaysia.  

Dr Rohani has spent a number of years abroad while studying for her masters and doctoral degrees. Currently, she makes frequent visits to UK and Australia where two of her children work. This exposure has rendered a native speaker quality to her English language communication to not to mention a certain sophisticated global perspective. Unlike most, Dr Rohani had an early start as her father was a student of Raffles College, Singapore in the 1940s and from whom she acquired a love for seeking knowledge. It is her family background, her reading, experience, academic qualifications and her social and professional networks that gives Dr Rohani the informed base which is reflected in her writing and that puts her apart from the average writer or translator.

Academic Qualifications. These include: a Ph.D (English Language Teaching, Southampton University, 1995), an M. Sc (English Language Teaching, Florida State University, Tallahassee, 1983) and a B.A. (hon, English and History, University of Malaya 1970) and an Education Diploma (ELT, University of Malaya, 1971).

Overseas Consultancy Experience. Since 2004, she has embarked on a post-retirement career as consultant in various capacities, specifically education - Timor Leste (2004), the Ministry of National Education Indonesia (2005 and 2006) for basic education and life skills non-formal education respectively under World Bank funding. She also acted as ELT Advisor (ICT Learning, 2005) and was part of a management training team engaged in introducing outcomes-based management for the government of Zimbabwe (2005).  She is well-known in education circles such as UNESCO and SEAMEO (Bangkok) and is acknowledged to be a curriculum expert by the World Bank (Washington).

AREAS OF EXPERTISE. Dr Rohani has expert knowledge in a number of areas as outlined below:

Writing: She has wide experience in putting together official and publicity documents, speech writing and producing professional papers and official publications. She has also been heavily involved in producing modules and teachers’ guides and assisted in textbook writing when the KBSR and KBSM school curricula were being developed in the 1980s. This also involved extensive experience in editing and quality control and enhancement of materials. A good part of the writing involves translations, especially publicity materials which often had to be written in two-languages to reach a wider audience. In the current post-retirement period, she has written speeches for launches, seminar openings and closings, various reports and papers which are commissioned work and reviews and localisation of books for publishers, both local and foreign.

Oral Presentations. Dr Rohani is also a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.

Training. She has conducted many training courses in teaching-learning methodology, ELT, ICT in learning, curriculum development, assessment and evaluation, management, etc.

Smart Schools and Computers-in-Education. She was involved in the Smart Schools Project (1997-2000) and its unique pedagogy. She has led teams producing teaching-learning materials in electronic format for various MOE projects such Computers-in-Education (KDP) and the Teaching of Science and Mathematics in English in 2002-2004.

People Development. During the course of her career, Dr Rohani has conducted many interviews for masters and PhD scholarships and for openings in the organisation concerned. She works closely with staff to assist them in their career development and through her counselling, advice and expectation of standards can bring out the best in a worker. She also did a fair share of human resource management and training at Schools Division and the CDC, MOE.

Personal Qualities. Dr Rohani is sharp and analytical and has an ability to grasp a client’s needs immediately and is consistently able to produce quality wriitng. She is able to meet tight deadlines with ease. She is open and has a pleasant personality and youthful manner which makes her easy to relate to. She is accommodating in situations where re-writing and modifications are asked for. Her writing is cohesive, incisive and delivers the impact intended. She has an ability to quickly grasp a specialised area and perform a creditable writing job on it.
