Vera Gomes

I have a Baccalaureate and a Degree on Translation (Translator and Interpreter), by the Technological and Management Superior School (Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão) of Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (Instituto Politécnico de Leiria), in Portugal. During my studies my education was focused on subjects as analysis and translation of technical and literature texts; Consecutive and Simultaneous Interpretation; languages studies in English, French and Spanish; cultural studies of Portugal, England, France and Spain; linguistics and translation technologies such as Trados 2006, Multiterm’95 and Win2020. I also took some extra-curricular subjects: Management Organisation and Secretariat Practices.

The first place I worked on was through the course I attended in Leiria, a small company directed to machinery equipment trade. I had many tasks, among them, issuing and archiving documents; checking of products sales, purchases and profitability margins; managing data base on programs such as Mailist Controler and Winfax; translation of products’ technical data and several documents; banking deposits and answering telephone calls. This training alerted me for the possibility of having a strict employer. The person who was orientating me was overloaded with work and worries, so I had to develop a sense of what were my daily tasks and how would I accomplish them, many times without any support.

From March to August 2008 I worked as an assistant at the Marketing and Imagery Department at Grupo Casais, S.A.. My tasks included the compilation of a guest list for the company’s 50^th birthday; sending invitations and receiving its confirmations; archiving documents; translation of the company’s website from Portuguese to English and French (www.casais.pt / www.casais.pt/fr / www.casais.pt/gb), its belonging real estate company web page (www.imocasais.pt) and also civil construction texts. This second training made me more acquainted with diplomacy. For the company’s 50^th birthday party, we have received many calls and emails with confirmations, meaning we have to know how to address to important people and to be the perfect image of the company.

Nowadays I am a freelance translator to a company in Portugal. Besides translating, I also revise some translations in order to make them more accurate. I translate mostly form English and Spanish to Portuguese, in areas such as mechanics, engineering, media news, health, cinema, financial world, among others. In what concerns revisions, the languages are also from English and Spanish to Portuguese and the areas I have been working on are legal agreements, engineering and health.

 I have a great ability in understanding several complex issues and to react swiftly to changing circumstances. Since I have already worked as an administrative I can easily manage information and communicate effectively. I have a very strong sense of initiative and imagination, meaning that my intellectual curiosity and motivation are high.

I also have the ability to work consistently and under pressure, both independently and as part of a team, and the idea of a multicultural working environment fascinates me.

I perfectly command all aspects and stylistic levels of the Portuguese language. I am also very at ease with English, Spanish and French, though I mostly translate from the first two. 

I already have a Great level of familiarity with economics, financial and legal affairs, technical or scientific fields.

 On what concerns my translation skills, I have a high capacity to understand texts in the source language and to render them correctly in the target language, respecting all the concepts inherent to the translation.

I also have the ability to obtain rapidly and efficiently, in both source language and target language, the background knowledge necessary to produce a translation of professional standard, which includes the ability to use research tools.

Since I have learned to use CAT tools, such as Trados, I can also say that I have a good capacity to master computer-assisted translation and terminology tools.
