Alison Varley

Born and educated in Britain, I took a 6-month course in technical and specialised translation after graduating in French hons. with German subsidiary.  Staff translation posts followed, first, in a junior capacity, with a firm of London patent agents, then with the EU in Brussels, and subsequently with the Ministry of Defence in London.

After moving to Italy for personal reasons, I worked in export sales for several years, acquring a thorough knowledge of the Italian language and the country's habits and culture.

For 18 years I worked chiefly for a US Government open-source information agency, first editing translations of science and technology articles from German and Italian, and then translating articles of interest to the US Government from the general French and Italian press, largely on politics, economics, terrorism, organised crime etc.

Since US budget cuts early in 2007 made it imperative to extend my clientèle, I have been working for agencies in Italy, France, Belgium, Germany, the UK, Ireland and Spain, translating texts whose subject matter has included education, tourism, museum exhibitions, politics, marketing and advertising, general business, agriculture, wine making and more technical topics.

Work performed in the past for other clients has covered spheres such as the printing and pharmaceutical industries, commercial correspondence, classical music (record sleeves) etc.
