Professional Experience - Translation
-----------------------------------------------------
Experience Summary:
I have 15 years' experience of writing I.T.-related documents of all kinds, notably user requirements, technical specifications, operations guides and user guides. I have also been an end-user of such documents produced by others. Therefore, I am able to offer a practical added-value which another translator without the benefit of years of both writing and using such documents would not. I have some 6 years' experience of translating such documents, including 2 years living and working in Paris.
Freelance Translator: 18/02/03 – present
My translation experience includes:
- IT documents for Euler Group (see below): technical and user guides, test scenarios, specifications, etc.
- Various documents for an industrial waste processing company (internal group newsletter, brochures, etc.)
- Invitations to tender for rolling stock
- Documentation for a charity operating in developing countries on such subjects as running post-natal clinics, nutrition guides, an explanation of the organisation's budget procedures, guides for drilling water wells, etc.
- Website for a French telecoms/call-centre company, which apart from translating the text, included ensuring that each page looked as it should in a web browser, and maintaining the links between pages.

- Invitation to tender
- Software selection documentation
- Business Requirements specifications
- Program specifications
- Technical user guides for common modules, technical procedures (file transfer, etc)
- Business end-user guides for functionality - screens etc, training sheets
Plus more general documentation such as:
- a multilingual glossary of business terms
- discussion documents
- meeting minutes
- on-screen application error messages.

Senior Analyst-Programmer: 09/05/95 - 17/01/03
Euler Trade Indemnity (ETI)
One Canada Square, London E14 5DX
From 1999, I worked exclusively on a project to build a single IT system for use by insurance underwriting departments in the UK, in France (ETI's parent company is French) and in the Dutch and Belgian subsidiaries. This role was a move away from what was previously an essentially technical IT role, both in this and in previous jobs. My everyday work - which could be summed up as specifying the system and then explaining the system to various parties, both end-user and IT - was conducted in both English and French interchangeably, including the writing of specifications in French.
I began my time at ETI working as an analyst-programmer on enhancements and minor projects on ETI’s in-house underwriting system, such as the installation of a name-searching system, and the implementation of Insurance Premium Tax in 1996.
In 1997, following ETI’s acquisition by a French credit insurer, I worked on projects to exchange information with our French and Belgian partners, both on-line and in batch mode, using both English and French software.
(Self-Employed) Analyst-Programmer: 04/01/93 - 28/04/95
F.I.Group (now known as Xansa)
Hemel Hempstead, Herts.
Maintenance and support of mainly financial (payroll, accounting) IT systems - responding to user requests or queries, programming, working on the on-line applications, creation and manipulation of files, on-call overnight support, and implementation of software upgrades.
Analyst/Programmer: 08/09/87 - 28/06/91
Northern Telecom Europe (NTE) (now known as NorTel)
New Southgate, London, N11
Tasks essentially as per position with F.I.Group at Hemel (1993-1995) but with heavy bias towards payroll and including effective responsibility for that system. Also worked on the successful project to outsource all mainframe software & systems to F.I. Group.
