BACKGROUND
I am a chemist and physicist and have been a professional free-lance scientific translator for 24 years. I have been translating at least 500,000 words per year on the average from Russian, French, Italian, Spanish, and German into US English. This has included millions of words from journal articles in most areas of chemistry and many areas of physics and materials science, as well as certain related areas of biology and geology; three published books (chemistry and biophysics); internal laboratory reports on equipment and procedure validation and qualification, quality assurance in the pharmaceutical industry, failure/deviation reports, standard operating procedures, clinical trial protocols, pharmaceutical package inserts, patents, and environmental impact statements.

Available on request. Translation is usually billed by the target word (English character count basis), hourly, or by flat fee. Examples of other hourly jobs include: alignments in Excel, for translation memories; consulting on chemical translations (researching queries, advising on terminology and style for non-chemists); revision of my prior translations to match new versions of source text; constructing and maintaining glossaries in my specialties.

TYPICAL PROJECTS
1) Italian chemistry project (about 35,000 words total over several months), involving translation of technical correspondence, lab reports, patents for a particular company.

2) Ongoing French pharmaceutical/biomedical project (about 43,000 words so far), involving mainly standard operating procedures/quality assurance for a particular company producing a medical device. Requires knowledge of chemistry lab procedures especially, and some physics and materials science.

3) Translated the entire December 2000 issue of the Russian Pharmaceutical Chemistry Journal (Khimiko-farmatsevticheskii Zhurnal) for Consultants Bureau (Plenum Publishers). 49 pages, 16 articles, about 28,000 words.

4) Translated several related Russian patents (about 49,000 words total) over a three-week period. The subject matter involved solid state physics and optics. Also hourly work (about 60 hours billed) constructing similar patent document translations from the earlier versions.

5) Translated over 240,000 Russian words during a year-long project involving Russian research journal articles relevant to a biotech project.

8) Translation of standard operating procedures and reports for a German pharmaceutical company during long-term project (total about 52,000 words).

9) Translated the Spanish book Introduction to the Thermodynamics of Biological Processes by Jou and Llebot for Prentice-Hall. Also translated two Russian books for Consultants Bureau: Ambident Anions (organic chemistry) and Mathematical Theory of Electrophoresis (aimed especially at biologists and biochemists).

10) Translated the entire Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Biophysics sections of the Doklady (Proceedings of the Russian Academy of Sciences) for the period July-December 1993 (Consultants Bureau). The Biophysics section included microbiology and genetics as well.
