Would you go ahead with projects from this agency?
OK. So, I receive a personalized email from them asking for work, etc. etc. we get to the translation sample test point. They submit a XLS around 100 words and a 800 words DOC document.

I translate the xls and kindly ask them to pay for the 800 words, explaining that it is too long and that I am willing to translate only up to 250 for free.

Then I receive this reply:

"
We do agree your point, but the problem is we are looking for translator for a long run,so our client is so specific in choosing the translator.

If you can't do this,we will pay for the sample.

And we also inform you that our mode of payment will through wire transfer and payment will be done for every 400 USD.
As our project has high volume to translate we can't make payment on daily/weekly.

Note : We are a big company, you can trust us 100 % for payment. We don't have any complaints about payment you can check in internet.

Feel free to contact me if you have any clarification.

I mostly have a problem with the "every 400 USD" part. Everything is vague, but I have the full company info and their Hall of shame info is okay.

Thank you for you opinion.

I think I will go through with them, because I reviewed their website and it looks genuine 100%.

Thank you to everyone for taking the time to read and kindly answer my question. It confirms my views on the matter. Any serious agency should be able to pay with Paypal and within 30 days of invoice, unless otherwise agreed.

Thanks! If there is any reward system or points to award, please let me know, I am new on TC.

RE: Would you go ahead with projects from this agency?

If they say this to every translator, they will get $ 350-worth translations from everyone for FREE!!! With all the translators on TC they would become very rich and very quickly and still keep their good reputation because they do not technically owe money to anyone, come on, you cannot accept this offer! Limit yourself to 250 free word if you really want to...and that's it.

I don't believe their high-volume thing. I work for one direct client and because she gives me projects almost on a daily basic I invoice her twice a month, no matter what the amount is.

Anyways, good luck!

My test is simple: If you do not feel comfortable with this company, walk away.  You are already suspicious of them; things will probably only get worse.

RE: Would you go ahead with projects from this agency?

Hi, I can't see how old this thread is, and who posted it; I am new here.

But I offer my humble opinion:

The english text you cited is quite bad (linguistically, grammatically) and simple (style), and sounds quite fishy; just too general.

For a "big company", they should have better communication, and offer serious (and SPECIFIC) terms to you.

If they have "no complaints about payment" and "you can see IN internet", then they should have the trust to pay you up front for the samples, and trust YOU to refund them, if your work was not acceptable. You could offer them that, with specific conditions. Did they comment on the quality of your first (xls-sheet) translation? Were they satisfied?

For a "big company" looking for quality translation, a small amount as down-payment should not be a risk, nor an issue.

Once you both agree on your terms and amount of work, off course the payment schedule with min. amounts of 400 USD should be fine, I think. But for starters, they should recognize your value and offer to pay you first, as you are a "small" freelancer who cannot work for free. If they do not understand that, they are the wrong customer...

If you have really "checked" their web-site and think it is a good and serious company, you could call thier accounts dept. and ask some questions:

e.g.: how you can invoice them, details of what to put into your invoice, etc.

During that conversation, you could casually ask about any min. limit of transfering money, and what bank details they require, etc.

(Nowadays, int'l money transfer is not expensive between most western countries, aswell as SE-Asia. So for an amount of a few hundred USD, the banking fees are very small, maybe 10-20 USD.)

What I am suggesting is, that you don't rely on emails, but really CALL them and speak with someone responsible.

Also, you cold translate one relevant paragraph of the word.doc as a final sample, and offer the rest after payment.

Good Luck!

rgds,

FRITZ
