RE: What kind of music do you enjoy?

For me an alternative to live performances came not with the Internet, but with (a) HD live broadcasts from the Met at selected movie theaters (following which I have a hard time going to the real world opera, so perfect is the HD thing), and (b) the TV channel  Mezzo which I get via satellite.

That sounds ideal.

RE: What kind of music do you enjoy?

Yet I do see a difference between consuming and experiencing music. I tend to use the former verb when music merely serves as background to other activities. When we "listen" to music in a shopping mall, restaurant, while translating/writing/reading/studying, we primarily do that: shop, eat, translate/write/read/study with music just serving as background noise. In my parlance, we don't really experience music at that time. To experience music rather than to consume it like people consume ads or news we need to focus on it.

I agree 100%.  In fact, I am not capable of having music be background sound while I do things like translating because I am always digesting what is happening in the music.  If music is played in shopping malls and such it has one of two effects: if it is good music then I am rivetted to the spot listening - if it is bad music it drives me out of the store.  But it seems that many people use "music" as a kind of pacifier and they need it to function at boring jobs and they need it around while not listening to it.  I've encountered store clerks who tell me how bored they are when the sound system is broken, but yet on other days will say "Oh, I wasn't listening." if I comment on something I heard.  It seems to be an incessant steady rhythm and familiar repeated tones that are calming (I've never figured it out.)

I read that one movement in modern music was an attempt by a composer to create "ambient" music.  He wanted the audience to be part of the sound scape.  The instructions in the program were that when the orchestra started, they were to continue talking, because the babble of voices and shuffle of feet was part of the "music".  But as soon as the orchestra started, being regular concert goers they went silent and started to listen.  The composer was disappointed.  In the 21st century he would be pleased, because that is the regular behaviour of many people.

Same here.

But it seems that many people use "music" as a kind of pacifier

Too true, alas...
