Personal details

Dutch (The Netherlands) is my mother tongue. I pretend to be fluent in English, proficient in German and French, and I have developed advanced reading skills in Afrikaans, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Spanish and Thai. Besides, I have profound knowledge of the specific vocabulary and syntax used in Flemish (Dutch Belgium / Belgian Dutch).

Although my mother tongue is Dutch, I have more experience in translating into English. I personally do more than fifteen language combinations of which eleven on a daily or at least weekly basis:

Background

My flair for languages seems rooted in my family, with four other (semi-)professional translators and two literary writers. I am a (yet) unpublished writer of both poetry and prose.

Work experience (selected)

In 2003, I started a new career as a professional, full‑time, freelance, multilingual translator. I work for a dozen translation offices in Asia, as well as for about fifteen in Europe, North-America and South-Africa.

Prior work experience includes positions in The Netherlands, South America, Africa and Asia, in sales, finance, administration, management and language education at SME’s as well as for the local government. Besides, I have been a self-employed part-time art dealer for ten years.

Education

University: Economics at the VU (Amsterdam) – not graduated

High school: VWO (secondary education leading to A-levels), graduated in 1980

I use one CAT tool, a productivity and accuracy enhancing tool, personally developed and integrated in Office 2003. As for Translation Memory, I rely on my head in combination with comprehensive glossaries for eight languages, which I have been compiling since 2003. Yet, I am considering to start using Wordfast.

Additional information

Working hours: Mostly eight days a week from ± 3 am – 3 pm gmt. I can be flexible, because I work at home, an office that never closes.

General availability: several hours per day, depending on ongoing commitments.

Estimated average response time to an email: during working hours less than half an hour.

Free disposable daily output: 1000-2000 words.

I work full-time, freelance. Twenty regular clients - agencies and end users - in Asia and Europe generally keep me occupied half of the day.

I primarily take on English, Dutch (incl. Flemish), German, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish > Dutch and English. I do NOT outsource.

Commercial, financial, legal, life event and general documents constitute about 70% of my work. Besides, I translate user manuals + operating instructions (> 50k words in 2008) and other content.
