RE: The Pros and Cons of CAT tools - a general discussion
Hi Nanna,
Is "Tak" the correct way of saying "Thank you" in Danish? If so, then "Tak!!". In other words, many thanks for your friendly response to my -- hopefully -- helpful contribution to this forum.
Usually, I do not contribute that much to forums: I am usually very busy with translation, localization and technical authoring work, and have recently started co-operating with Graham on many things "terminological". (Wonderful experience, by the way. Graham is a fountain of knowledge, and I consider myself not exactly stupid...)
But to go back to the original issue: please do consider using CAT tools, but only if you have source material with a certain amount of repetition. If you are doing mainly literature translations or 'creative' work like PR and marketing, I sometimes doubt the effective use of CAT tools.
With best regards,
Nico.

RE: The Pros and Cons of CAT tools - a general discussion
Hi Graham,
I myself bought the Trados Studio 2009 version, but never installed it. I am afraid of relinquishing my "old" Suite licence. As long as I do not "return my [2007] licence", I feel safe. Until next Windows crash comes along, of course...
Will sign off now. Too late to talk sense. Feel like joining my wife and kids, and have a glass of wine. Sorry folks! Have nice weekend.
Best regards,
Nico.
PS Did you know that "SDL" is actually part of a German car registration if that person lives in a certain German region? Have not yet come across "MMQ" or "DVX" ...

RE: The Pros and Cons of CAT tools - a general discussion
I just got done using another German CAT tool, OmegaT, on a document. When I got done, it had not formatted the tables properly, basically ignoring them. So I had extra work to do, going in and redoing a lot of it. I am not going to use CAT in future. I don't see the advantage at all. I also don't like the way it divides up lines and is line-focused.
I truly don't see the advantage of CAT right now and I think this might be an example of "the emperor has no clothes..."

I still remember my days in which everything was done in long-hand and then, after approval (with my corrections!) from the main editor, was typed out... But sometimes I think that those were the days. At least my efforts and work were appreciated. Nowadays, nearly all linguistic work is treated as a commodity.
...and many of the tools we now use are taken for granted...we seem to forget that, however good or bad we think a tool is, it has often taken so much time and effort [plus all the headaches...] to develop...
BTW, someone I spoke to this evening, who had purchased Trados 2009, has not installed it yet and prefers to use the 2007 version. Why? Because a few clients had advised him not install it because of the risks involved. They themselves still used the 2007 version because they had had so much trouble with the new version. What's the truth in all of this, apart from the compatibility issue? I have version 2007 on a laptop and have never upgraded to 2009 because I switched to MemoQ. I knew that there were problems with the 2009 version of Trados but didn't think they were that bad...this doesn't sound good at all.
Don't trust all the rumors, Graham. I've been using Studio since the very early Beta stage, i.e. since March 2009. The first release from June 2009 was indeed riddled with various bugs, but SP1 issued in September 2009 resolved most of them. SP2 added some new filters and functionalities.
So far, so good. Studio has been performing pretty well. Ah, yes, I do have a comparison: I also use WF, MQ, TransitNXT, and Across.
But anyway, please don't hijack this topic to a which-cat-is-the-best debate. We've already seen plenty of that...
