Thank you, Laurent! In fact, it's always been a binder for me...

RE: Do you speed read?

Dear all,

Nanna: "Rereading poetry is interesting. A poem read ten years ago, remembered and then reread, suddenly becomes a new poem in the light of who I have become since I first read the poem......"

Who con't agree with that? I have just re-read "Wuthering Heights" again (In my opinion, one of the most powerful novels of its time).

Jacek: "Lucky bastard"! There are so many treasures over here in Europe; and I have only seen a couple of them;

Nigel (and Nanna); I think most of us will agree to the fact that speedreading and translation don't match; by the way; I did notice "checking", but see your point.

>> But I don't see much use for "using the finger" (apart from poorly written text with exceptional bad layout, where one can't make heads nor tail.............)

Have a nice day!

(Autumn is very mild this year -knock on wood..............-)

RE: Do you speed read?

I think perhaps that I didn't explain myself properly, I never actually set out to read fast, it just became a habit! No courses or training programes were used, I wasn't even aware that I did until a couple of years ago. Simply put... I just read fast.

It is very handy to be able to read fast sometimes, but of course, with work, translating, proof reading etc. it is always a problem.

I have to make my eyes move slower over the sentences, move my brain into a lower gear. For me, it takes a conscious effort to read at a slower pace.

So, Nigel, I was actually planning on using your finger method to train myself to slow my reading down a tad.

regards Teri

PS. If I use my right hand to eat the sarnies, surely I can use the fingers on my left hand to point with.

RE: Do you speed read?

I must say I only got so far with the course. I stopped progressing with the course at the point where I felt my comprehension of the text was reduced.

The excercises started with doing a line left to right. But gradually went towards doing 3 lines at a time going towards the right and then 3 lines going towards the left. Later stages had the reader almost tapping the page before turning forward. I did not get anywhere near that quick!

The introduction to the course started by talking about how you recognise a face. Stating that you comprehend the whole rather then each individual espect in a set order. It stated that this can be applied to reading and that your brain can absord the information and unjumble it.

Theresa, it appears that you do this automatically!

Has anybody else got any notes from a speed reading course. I would be interested to hear if there are any variations in the principles.
