RE: The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy
I really would prefer it if we Americans would just butt out of this whole issue. Why are we supposed to "solve" this issue. I doubt it will ever be solved. Religion is about absolutes, and politics is about what can be done. And when you add religion to politics, you get people who cannot come to an agreement. How can you say to the Israeli fundamentalists that their "Judea" is not legitimate ? And how can you say to the Muslims that their view - that Palestine belongs to them 100% is not legitimate. The two sides will never agree, and thus the only logical thing for America to do would be to butt out of this. We would support Israel if it is attacked, and as a democratic country, but I personally have no desire to try to "solve" this issue for them.

I really prefer it if the Arabs and Jews would work this out among themselves and not involve us Americans. And if they can't, then so be it. But they then cannot blame us.

I hate to say it, because I support Israel as a western and democratic nation, but the settlements are not in the U.S. national interest the same way as let's say keeping Al Quida from having a base in Afghanistan is, or preventing Iran from stopping oil coming out of the Persian Gulf is.

Unfortunately, what we prefer usually doesn't happen in politics. Isn't that a paradox?
