Living with a translator or interpreter
Hello fellow linguists !
After reading this message from Masked Translator, I wonder how funny (or not !) your spouse, parents, children, friends... find the life with a translator or an interpreter. Would you please ask them ?
My family and my husband complain I always correct them in the middle of a sentence.

I don't correct anybody. It probably depends on somebody 's personality not on the profession. I have a friend, for example, who keeps straightening pictures in everybody's house because she cannot stand any kind of imbalance, not even 2mm difference.

I am told that it is not at all funny. The main complaint is that I have taken up every available wall with bookshelves and have not thrown one book away since I started on this translation lark in 1979 - some of them have started to smell like antique book shops already and deserve a decent burial. Apparently I passed the bounds of reason when I started to board up complete windows to make even more wall space for bookshelves.

In the middle! Oh, that is really insufferable! I always wait until the end of the statement, joke, complaint, or whatever it is before I start correcting and then I back up my reasoning with references to relevant sources. And I take my time, no matter how late the hour.
One nasty habit that I do have is when watching subtitled films on TV and I detect a disparity between spoken text and subtitle. I am usually told that nobody cares if the subtitles are wrong, just keep quiet and let everybody else enjoy the film.

I always tell her about bad subtitles and funny translations. Whether a direct result, her vocabulary is getting better...
