I'm trying to translate a tag document with Tag Editor and Workbench (TRADOS 2006, Windows Vista, Office 2003) and I keep getting this error message.

"(80001)  Translator's Workbench Error:  The server threw an exception."

It lets me translate the first unit as usual but gives me the error message whenever I try to Open/Get or other similar commands (e.g. Set/Close next Open/Get) for other units I'd like to translate. Anyone know what the problem is? I'd rather use Tag Editor because the document is chock full of tags.

Hi Ivan,

The server exception issues usually appear at cleanup stage. If you get them during translation, it might very well have to do with incorrect and/or faulty term recognition.

I would recommend that you try the following:

• First of all, backup your TM and termbases in a safe place, just in case something goes wrong.

• Another safety measure to make sure the proper files are registered. Register your version of Trados again:

  Start menu > All programs > Trados > Register Trados

• Check that "Run terminology recognition in the background" under Options > Terminology > Recoginition Options is unchecked. This should disable the part creating the error.

Try again with that. If you still get the error, then try to reorganise your TM (File > Reorganise).

All that said, Trados 2006 is supposedly not compatible with Vista. Even if you can force the install and use TWB+Word and TWB+Tageditor, Multiterm is one of th incompatible parts.

You might consider upgrading or even better, try alternate solutions. Have a look at the forum threads here, and you'll see that many people are perfectly happy in a non-Trados world.

I've had this problem today, working with Workbench + TagEditor - no MS Office involved in the issue. I have the same SDL Trados 2006 (7.5) as the OP, and for the life of me I could not understand what could be happening. Then I changed to another TM and the problem did not occur, so I concluded that the issue was TM-specific.

I exported the bugged TM into a TMX format, opened this in Oliphant (http://okapi.sourceforge.net/) and cleaned the tags (Entries>Remove Codes). Then I created a new TM, imported the corrected TMX and voilá - no problems whatsoever.

That's me 2 cents on the issue, although I don't know to which cases this can be a solution.
