See, that kind of thing reallly bugs me. It is beyond stupidity. It is incomprehensible. And it's cruel. The thing is that to rejoice in Obama's election only becuase of his colour would seem to diminish and disrespect him. His attributes as a human being, the work he has done to reach where he is, the things he represents and believes are what give him his worth and to discount that and look only at his race does not seem right to me.
I do see this election of a victory of a people that has managed to overcome old prejudices and atttiudes. Maybe that is a celebration of the election process or the growth of a nation. In that sense maybe I haven't gotten it before.
Maxi
Maxi,
You are right about your above comments. This is the type of person you are and you are color blind, gender blind. For you, it is inconceivable to think in such a base way. Besides, Canada is different when it comes to race issues, ...
We dont rejoice only because of his skin colour. President Clinton was loved, Kennedy was too. The Americans people who voted for him did vote for a very qualified man, as well as a well qualified first lady. Maxi, in our black world, we must be over qualified to get to anywhere otherwise we get nothing at all. Black folks are also very particular about whom they vote for, the reason they hardly voted in the past.
Please stay the way you are, I believe that you are a person who accept people for what they are and not forthe colour of their skin, or what the parents´skin colour were. We are looking forward to the times when all of us will be of the same frame of mind, like yours.
Why do you think that all the BIG ones like Powel, and many others shed tears about his nomination. How can all these successfull people be wrong in their feelings? They know the President´s qualifications as well but didnt hide their emotions.
This election will erase 300 years of bad memory. I decided to watch ´Roots´ last Spring. I saw it 20 years ago and wanted to see it again. This is a pain that just cannot go away from the black community. This election seems to be able to erase that or to put a cover on top of it. I speak for many of my black friends and relative. I talk to them and listen to their feelings. Many went to sleep because they knew it was not going to happen.

"His country of adoption"? Obama did not "adopt" the US; he was born here and has lived here most of his life, minus some years of his childhood which he spent in Indonesia. And I wouldn't say it was exactly "easy" for the Catholic John F. Kennedy to win the presidency in 1960; he had to overcome anti-Catholic bias and then won by the narrowest of margins, if he legitimately won at all (there are still serious questions as to whether his operatives stole the election).
Oh,
I wasnt referring to restaurant when in using the verb serve.
Besides, my niece is a well dressed, well mannered, educated, 30 year old university graduate.
Even a bit sophisticated like myself. Besides, we are always overdressed as uttered by ´Indiana Jones` some years ago.

ok David, wrong wording, I'll admit, since he's born in America of American mother and grandparents! In any case, the country has now truly "adopted" him! I like your thoughts about serving as a 'father role model' - same could be true as well of Mrs. Obama as a successful female and mother role model - and it might just work.

Marie, dear, have you ever been to New York?
So please come. You have to examine for yourself the myths.
I can assure you you can go to any restaurant you want if you are properly dressed and can afford it, unless there are some hight society clubs where nobody could not go unless you are a member, something of this sort.

Thank you for your kind invitation.
I am a New Yorker from Flatbush Avenue.
In 1982, I was a waitress in Juniors Restaurant as I was learning Business Administration in a
school nearby.
I have posted twice that I was not referring at a restaurant. My last visit was in February 2005.
But I am like in the US and in New York everyday. I am quite informed about black people´s situation there. I will let you know the next time I am coming. We can meet for a piece of straberry cheese cake.

I did not think Marie you were from New York because your native language was posted as German and French. I also thought your vision of New York was a little bit different than it is now. It is very nice, in fact, now. All the best.

I hope to see you one day.
Quite a lot of Americans are here, blacks and others as well. Many artists, singers, gospel singers, students. Missionaries, all kind of folks.
In your other posts you mentioned your Austrian percentages- You are indeed a typical Austrian: A blend of Poles, Hungarians, Czecks, Serbians and today Afro-Europeens, ... I forgot Sloveniens.
A real fight to preserve some kind of identity that is more German or Arian preferred.
I am looking forward to being New York for some days, soon.

Very well said, , by Marie Gluck, a black woman who is proud to be a black woman and who is not ashamed or angry or resentful about anyone using the term black, which, by the way, is the right term to call a black person.
I have met quite a few racists who were too afraid to use the term "black" and used "person of color" instead. I do not fear the word black. I am not a racist and I know for sure that any black person will approve of me using the term; they use it themselves and with pride.
Like David Kallans pointed out earlier on this thread, there's nothing ridiculous or wrong with these terms by themselves. Good or evil has nothing to do with the vocabulary chosen. Good or evil have to do with the actions, the thoughts, the beliefs and the feelings behind the words, not with the words themselves.

Thank you, Bertha! am not too happy to see that Liliana has hijacked it, leading the whole thread astray what its initial intent...
I know the feeling, Dominique, since something similar happens to me whenever I start a thread about animal rights. Someone will always pop in trying to manipulate by making me feel I am wrong or downright stupid; they will do and say just anything in order to have their particular point of view prevail.
Do as I do. I always let all those comments (or should I say hijackings?) roll off my shoulders.
