Are you a morning or an evening type of person?

The question is not so much whether you do or don't burn the midnight oil, because as a freelancer you may simply have to, but when are your most productive hours? I recently heard from a specialist that human brain is programmed to productively focus on work for only four hours a day. So it is important to exploit those hours as much as possible.

Here is a little story from http://www.slate.com/id/2193208/:

When I told my friends I had found a way to transform myself into a morning person, they responded in one of two ways. The night people leaned in as if I were about to reveal the location of a stash of pirate gold. The morning people simply regarded me with pity and wonder. "I just don't understand why it's so hard," said one friend, a Danish medical student. "I can get up anytime I want."

This sort of smugness is prevalent among morning people, who count among their ranks Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, nearly every American president, and even Jesus. (See Mark 1:35: "And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.") Night people are stuck with psychopaths like Adolf Hitler and Juan Arreola, the guy in Pennsylvania who nearly killed his girlfriend's 2-year-old last year, explaining to a judge, "I'm not a morning person."

[...]

So when are your most productive hours? When do you concentrate the best?

NOTE: ON THIS POLL, THE TERM "EVENING" MEANS EVENING AND/OR NIGHT.

Jacek

Interesting!

As we approach the Winter solstice , the darkest day of the year, I don't wake up till around 0900 when it is just getting light. It is too late, even for me, and I'd like to wake up earlier, but the only way to do that is to set the alarm. I dislike the change to Daylight Saving time, which is when my body rhythm goes completely out of whack.

From http://www.utne.com/GreatWriting/Whats-Your-Writerly-Routine.aspx?blogid=38

Many writers have ridiculously specific routines that they adhere to. Charles Darwin’s son Francis once mapped out his father’s daily habits down to the half-hour. Darwin’s daily schedule, and those of many other famous writers, are compiled in the Daily Routines blog.

http://www.utne.com/Spirituality/The-No-Wake-Zone-Insomnia-Sleep.aspx

It turns out, though, that for well over a century we’ve been insulting our natural wake-sleep cycle by expecting to fall asleep precisely at 10 or 11 p.m., sleep solidly the entire night, and wake promptly at 6 or 7 a.m. There’s accumulating scientific and historical evidence that human beings, like many of our mammalian cousins, weren’t meant to follow what we consider a “normal” wake-sleep pattern of two strictly segregated blocks of time—16 uninterrupted hours awake, 8 uninterrupted hours asleep.

RE: Are you a morning or an evening type of person?

I am not a morning person but very recently, I've gone back to active dreaming and now I cannot wait to get to bed so I can dream. This, strangely, results in a different sleep/wake pattern that leaves me feeling almost totally refreshed when I awake - at 0600 - naturally and without the alarm clock.

I think I am an evening person who trained herself to be a morning person through living very close to the Ocean, and I really like it.

RE: Are you a morning or an evening type of person?

I loved reading this thread. It doesn't suprise me that there is a bias towards evening people on this survey - since you are all feelancers! I am convinced I am an evening/night person - certainly was at Uni before I entered the Corporate world - and it's one of the main reasons I am considering going freelance... Having to get up early to drive into the office every day is pretty counterintuitve for me and I am guessing quite a few self employed folks feel the same way!

Welcome to the forums, Fred! (I hope you don't mind my deleting your somewhat redundant post about there being no spellchecker here.)

Back to the topic, here is a new factor: Economy down, sleeplessness up
