I just tried a few and, in fact, they're quite tricky. Take this one: Water Idioms. He was told that the new plan he'd developed just wouldn't hold water — means: .......... My first reaction was to tick a, because I often use the expression, 'that won't float' about something that won't work. Nanna PS: We could discuss interesting ESL or TOEFL tests here: http://www.translatorscafe.com/cafe/MegaBBS/thread-view.asp?threadid=11061&posts=3

Not really. I was going to make a terrible joke about irish accents or Irish words but I couldn't think of one. I need to go and find one of my university French lecturers (an Irishman) and tap him for a few jokes.
To be honest, Russian attracts me because I have already started it, Berber because I have some friends in Algeria and that is their 2nd language (French their third and English their fourth) and Mandarin because I would have billions of people to practise with!

Thought so... I don`t learn Latvian, either, though I should. One knows Russian or English - one can communicate with Letts. Or Lithuanians. One thing different, still: Irish can come in handy when donating the rice.

Most Irish people in the cities have English as their first language. If it is anything like Welsh then even bilingualism could be contained to small parts of the country.
