Hello Jonathan,
I would be happy to fly to Glasgow, SCO for some days this year if you can arrange some informal meeting there.

I am a native Spanish/Galician speaker with a degree in Translating& Interpreting. based in Scotland and looking for a career in translation.

I would definitely be interested in meeting up with other translators/linguists in the area.

Thanks,

Begoña

RE: Glasgow Meetup

Weather-wise, early Summer might be a good time.  However, it might be a good idea to time it with one of Glasgow's festivals (http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/ArtsDevelopment/festivalsandevents.htm).

Just so long as we do it before September, from which time I will be spending most days in Edinburgh for a while.

Veteran? Why, I could be your grandfather! I was born up there on the Clyde just before WW2. Do you know where Bishop Street was? Don't search the map, it's gone for ever. That's where my father (+grandfather, greatgrandfather) made paint to protect The Queen Mary and Queen Elisabeth liners. I would love to come, but I am residing in the south of France.]

Good luck, Brian Morrison

RE: Glasgow Meetup

Could be interesting.  I'm based in Spain  now, but might be back over in summer to see the family and friends, so could possibly attend. The last time I tried to get translation work in Glasgow I got zero response. I found it hard to even get TEFL work too, although I did work on one summer TEFLA course in Edinburgh in 1990.

Please keep me up to date on your plans for the meet.

Be lucky, nm

Glasgow Meetup: Date Suggestion

How about Saturday 5th September as the date of our meetup?  This gives people lots of time to get tickets, hotels etc.  As soon as we have say 3 opr 4 people saying they can and want to come, we can confirm the date.

What do you think?

RE: Glasgow Meetup: Date Suggestion

Fine for me, Jonathan.  As I figured it out, I would have to take the train to Frankfurt-Hahn, fly from there to Glasgow-Prestwick - which is not a short journey, given all the odds I had with Deutsche Bahn back in January!

RE: Glasgow Meetup

I don't think it is too bad.  My sister is a post-doc researcher in the West of Germany and she does the same journey every eight weeks or so.  You do know that "Glasgow Prestwick" is about 50miles outside of Glasgow?!  There is a direct train from their to the city centre though.  What about if we make the main entrance of Central Station (Gordon Street, for all you Glaswegians) the meeting point, once we get more people confirmed?

Yes, and the Hahn airport is some 65 miles away from the Frankfurt/Main railway station.  So I am warned and prepared!

RE: Glasgow Meetup

Sabine, I cannot reccomend strongly enough that you try to get an Easyjet flight to Glasgow International (not Glasgow Prestwick, unless you want to accompany Laurent on the train, that is.)  From there, Central Station and/or all the major hotels are a 20 minute bus ride.  As for hotels, what kind of price range are you looking for?  Glasgow has everything from backpacking hostels to a 5* Hilton.  Pretty much all of them are counted as "City Centre" although I would need to give you travel directions from some of the ones on the edge of the City Centre as Glasgow City Centre is pretty massive.

RE: Glasgow Meetup

I think, I'll rely on taxi drivers - I usually get lost using public transport Regarding hotels, well, I would say a 3* should do. All I need is a bed, a bathroom, coffee and a ziggi (breakfast, you know ...). Easyjey offers flights from Alicante to Glasgow, I think - so Laurent will have to enjoy the Deutsche Bahn on his own

Yes, but my flight possibilities to PIK or GLA are rather limited by some excessive fares and impossible booking conditions.  So I think the DB is the lesser evil!

I think you are big enough to manage Prestick to Central on your own too, Laurent.  IIRC you get the journey free if you keep your plane ticket but don't quote me on that.  It is actually quite a pretty route in places and the station is part of the airport so it is pretty impossible to get lost.

I will take a look and see what I can find for you Sabine.  I will need to find out where they have stuck the taxi rank at Glasgow Airport now as they have changed the forecourt layout since the attack.  I know where all the buses are but I will need to check for taxis.  The bus really is so easy to catch and most drivers tell you when to get off.  We even have two companies fighting over the route now.

In the summer, or even before, I will compile a list of directions.  Funnily enough, Laurent's will be slightly easier! (Get on train, get off train at last stop, walk straight through forecourt to main entrance, meet funny looking Glaswegian.)

Mine too!  My problem is that I know so many good bookshops, online retailers and amazing writers that I would need to translate a million words a week to pay for them all.  I have figured out a way round it though.  I am going to try and meet as many of the authors as I can and suck out their best ideas.  That way I save money on books.

It looks like being the main entrance of Central Station (Gordon Street) as it is the easiest place to direct people to.  After that, we will need to think up some ideas.  i will get working on it soon but I have stowed out with work, research and writing just now.

RE: Glasgow Meetup

Hi there,

The Glasgoe meeting is a meeting of TC members and colleagues in Glasgow, Scotland. We have not organised a formal programme of events so I can't see it becoming a conference. However, I am open to suggestions as to what we could do. Since Glasgow boats an impressive range of museums, restaurants, galleries, shopping centres, architecture, libraries, a six-floor bookshop (with a decent sized "foreign language" section), coffee shops and general places of interest, I am open to all suggestions. For people who have never been before I recommend at least a couple of the following:

a ride on the clockwork orange (Glasgow's ring subway system);

the Kelvingrove art gallery/museum (free);

the aforementioned massive bookshop;

shopping;

coffee in the Argyle Arcade;

the Science museum;

a ride on the Glasgow Tower (if it is open).

Anything goes, as long as I can plan my flights and buy my tickets in time...  I could even stay in Glasgow for a few days, just in order to enjoy the sunny weather .    I think we all must agree on a given date and stick to it.  Some people may not be able to come no matter what this date is.

Laurent K.

PS: I am just pointing to this fact as weekend flights with Ryanair seem somewhat difficult to get...  As an example, there is no flight (available) on Sep 4 and the first (available) return flight is on Sep 8.

RE: Glasgow Meetup

Are you anywhere near an Easyjet airport? Ryanair use Prestwick which is, how shall I put it, as near to Glasgow as Ryanair are to offering free inflight foot massages. There is a train from there to Glasgow city centre and, if I remember correctly, it is free for all those who keep their boarding passes. It takes arounf 45minutes to an hour.

I would imagine that even with Easyjet, staying over the weekend or at least overnight would be easier. There is a wide range of hotels and B&Bs in and around Glasgow, from the Hilton to little places. So, I will leave it up to those who want to come.

Oh drat, I wish I'd seen this earlier - I was in the UK, and in the central belt, just last month.

Also - for more budget airline choice - note that one can easily fly to Edinburgh (Easyjet, Germanwings, AerLingus...) and get the bus through to Glasgow: if you have a small weekend bag, toddle down the road from the airport and catch a Citylink or Motorvator(?) coach (you need to walk along to the left or to the right to get to a stop for the coach - they don't stop at the stop by the airport junction).

Hi Weronika,

Sad to say, the Motorvator service ended about two years ago, while I was still a uni student in Edinburgh, doing the commute every day. Citylink still do the route but the fairs are around £8 return nowadays.

The meetup never did take place. Anyone fancy suggesting a better date since the flights will be cheaper now anyway?

RE: Glasgow Meetup

I will be in Glasgow until the 30th so anytime before that is good with me.  How about Monday 26th October?  Or is the weekend better?

However, If you want to see snow...  In all my childhood I only remember seeing a good snow once in the city, and that was in the month of February.  Maybe global warming has changed that.

RE: Glasgow Meetup

Weekend or Monday daytime should be fine for me. I will probably not be living in Glasgow itself by then but I will still be within travelling distance.

Should we decide on a date?  I am about to set off on my travels to Glasgow - leave here (Bolivian Amazon) on Friday, arrive in Glasgow on Thursday morning!!

As long as it is after next week, I am happy. Next week is looking crazier by the minute!

RE: Glasgow Meetup

How does the morning or afternoon of Monday 19th or Monday 26th sound?  What about those coming from further afield?  Are either of these dates good for you?

RE: Glasgow Meetup

Both sound good to me right now although i imagine the latter would work better for those travelling from further afield.
