The river Douro is born in Spain and crosses the north of Portugal, down to its mouth, right here in Oporto. Right up in the north, where the valleys are deep, creating a unique micro-climate, we have all the portwine vineyards.

You may travel up and down the river in one of these boats, have lunch/dinner, one or more days. If you are lucky enough to have your own boat, as I used to have, it's great fun - over the past years, the Douro is "crowded" with yachts. Dangerous to swimm, though, since it's very deep and full of dead trees, rocks, etc. But wonderful for waterskiing!

Bridge D. Luuus (one of our Kings), designed and built by Eiffel (admired, hum?), divides two towns - Oporto and Gaia. In Gaia you will find all the portwine cellars when you join me for our TC party... In good old days, the barrels used to be brought from right up north (about 200 km) in these boats, moved by man force alone, till the wine cellars. These boats are called "Rabelos"

You still have a few trams in Oporto, namely going through the old part of town

One of the porwine cellars - most of them still have british names. In the 18th / 19th century, many wealthy English families dedicated themselves to this commerce worldwide. Similarity of weather, you see? LOL...
