From where you sit, the White House may look as untidy as the inside of a stomach. As is said of the legislative process, sausage-making and policy-making shouldn't be seen close up.Donald Rumsfeld

RE: Weekend job offers

I myself couldn't have chosen any better image to describe the sufferings of a translator trying to be worthly paid...

There is nothing wrong with haggling, it goes on all over the world and has done for thousands of years, even giant corporations do it.

The trouble is, many translators do not know how to haggle, or feel that it is beneath their dignity.

Nobody is forcing them to sell their wares to the lowest bidder.

The real secret of being a freelance translator is not to need the money, i.e. have an alternative income, or at least think and act like somebody who does not need the money.

The alternative is to face the agencies, begging bowl in hand and grumbling about the ones who leave only 2 cents instead of the usual 5 cents.

Derek

That sounds close to acceptable, and yes, I always do.  What you are you offering?
