PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

November 2008 – Ongoing: Field Interpreter for the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.
This job entails travelling to different parts of the world and interpreting and facilitating communication for the Court's staff.  It requires the highest degree of accuracy even where Arabic is spoken by non-native Arabic speakers as every single characteristic of the speaker may be of importance.  I have been included in the team after several testing procedures and security checks.  Field interpreters are also provided with additional training for legal interpretation in addition to inductions on the Court's system of operation. 

July 2007 – December:  Translation and Interpreting Service for the High Court in England

This project entailed the translation of approximately 1,000 pages of documents related to the case.  Although they were mainly legal, medical reports were not absent from the bundle. This job also required on-site interpreting, mainly simultaneous, which was highly praised by the High Court judge. 

April  2007 – ongoing:  Translator for EuroMed Information Centre www.euromedinfo.eu

I am one of the main translators for the Centre that is responsible for publishing news of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership and events that take place between EU officials and their counterparts in the Mediterranean region.

March  2007:  Interpreter for the Dispute Resolution Centre (London)

I provided consecutive and simultaneous interpreting for a high profile international dispute.  This was a challenging assignment as it required endless research.  The parties, high legal experts, debated endlessly on minute questions of law; which in turn required a dedicated and comprehensive interpreting performance.  The three arbitrators, including the parties, praised my performance and commended the level of professionalism displayed.

November 2006 – ongoing:  Member of the NRPSI

After I became a member of the NRPSI (National Register of Public Service Interpreters) my work with courts, police stations, customs and different public service clients had expanded greatly.  I provide onsite interpreting, mainly legal, for those clients.  

November 2006 – ongoing:  Arabic Visiting Lecturer for City University (London)

I provide telephone/e-mail tutorials and assessments/examination for students seeking to earn an undergraduate distance learning degree in translation through City University.

April 2006 – ongoing: Lifeline languages Services.

I am a freelance interpreter for lifeline languages providing public service interpreting in courts, councils, hospitals, etc.

October 2005 – ongoing: Translator for Forced Migration Review, Oxford University, Oxford, UK. (www.fmreview.org)

FMR provides the humanitarian community with a practice-oriented forum for debate on issues facing refugees and internally displaced people in order to improve policy and practice and to involve refugees and Internally Displaced Persons in programme design and implementation.  FMR has acquired a reputation as the leading practical journal on refugee and displacement issues. 

May 2006 – ongoing: Translator for Tashkeel Media Group (Marvel Comic Books)

This work involves translating English language comic books into Arabic. Comics include X-men, Hulk and Superman Returns.

June 1998 – August 2005: Interpreter/Translator

Employed as an official interpreter/translator for various NGO projects, tour groups and business events which involved accompanying clients on trips to Syria and Jordan.

 November 2004 – August 2005: Translator for Al-Ghad Newspaper, Amman, Jordan. (www.alghad.jo)

Al Ghad newspaper is a highly regarded Arabic national daily paper in Jordan and I was employed as an official translator to translate current English language articles from international newspapers and news agencies for inclusion.  Articles translated covered a wide range of topics which provided me with excellent exposure to high level language and is provided me with invaluable professional experience.

June 1998 – August 2005: Self-employed Arabic Teacher

Working in and around Amman I worked as a private Arabic tutor to a wide range of clients from various nationalities, backgrounds and ages; including businessmen, students, children and tourists.  This required a flexible approach in order to adapt to the various needs and language abilities and enabled me to develop a successful teaching approach that has been well received by my clients; both individuals and groups. 

September 2000 - March 2002: Translator and Interpreter, International Business Association office in Amman.

International Business Association is a business consulting and development company that has offices in many countries throughout the world.    During this time I was employed on a part time basis and was responsible for translation of documents and reports and interpreting in meetings and seminars.
