RE: Ridiculous job offers
I completely agree about CAT tools, discounts and clients, Theo! And most of them are ridiculously expensive too! I think they can be a useful resource, but not in order to get discounts, no doctor would buy a stethoscope to get discounts, for example.
A while ago an agency came up to me saying: "our client doesn't pay for repetitions". I was tempted to reply: "then I won't bother with them"

I wonder if end clients would be pleased to learn that agencies don't pass on the discounts they bestow upon translators...

Just as you don't care, Theo, as long as you get your rate, I guess the end client doesn't care either as long as what he pays was agreed before. It's like with these buyers:

Assembled in China, the total cost of putting together just one phone was $178.45. Compare that with a sale price (including downloads) of $630 and Apple makes $452 on each phone: a whacking gross margin of 72%.

"Nike's founder, Philip H. Knight, owns Nike stock valued at $4.5 billion. Yet the CBS news program 48 Hours (October 17, 1996) showed women and children working at Nike shoe manufacturing plants in Vietnam, making 20 cents an hour, in unhealthy environments that reeked of glue (See http://www.usvetdsp.com/usvet/story24.htm). Michael Jordan's $20 million contract is more money than Nike pays all its Vietnam labor. On March 20th, Mr. Thuyen Nguyen, an investment banker of Vietnam Labor Watch released a qualitative study (see http://www.saigon.com/nike/reports/report1.html):
-
About 35,000 workers at five Vietnamese plants - more than 90 percent of them young women - put in 12-hour days making Nike shoes. Though labor costs amount to less than $2 a pair, the shoes retail for up to $180 in the United States. The Vietnamese workers earn $2.40 a day. ...

Why would the end consumer care about anything outside his consumption?

But back to the subject at hand...
I myself have never received a PO meant for a client, but it makes you wonder: what would a client think about the fact that agencies try to nickel and dime us for repetitions in Trados but charge full price to them? I had never thought of that. That's why I don't like to deal with stuff involving CAT tools. There's too much potential to be taken advantage of, imo.
