- My Japanese studies and interest in Japan began informally in 1980 at the age of 7 through
close friendships with neighborhood Japanese children who communicated with me largely in

As an infant, I was exposed to both Italian and English. From my very early childhood, my Italian mother and other relatives have provided me with a strong Italian language background. Having grown up in an Italian-speaking household, Italian is close to a native language for me.
