Scenario: You are riding in a car driven by a close friend. He hits a pedestrian. You could see his speedometer and know he was going at least 50 km per hour in an area of the city where the maximum allowed speed is 30 km per hour. There are no witnesses. His lawyer says that if you testify under oath that he was only driving 30km per hour it may save him from serious consequences.

What do you think you would do in a view of your obligation as a sworn witness and as a friend?...

I would try a middle road: I would not contradict my friend, but I would not actively lie. In court or otherwise.

It's still, you will argue, a form of lying, and I will have to agree that lying by omision is also lying.

RE: Intercultural awareness

Well, unlike in France, the Dutch government plans to ban Muslim face veils next year. Maybe at that point the woman’s religious requirements will also turn out to be more important than the law once tested in court?

And Jewish men are better than Muslim women

Only orthodox Jewish men.

And where on the scale are the ultra orthodox Jewish men?

...European governments debating whether to ban women from wearing some version of the Islamic veil ...

Meanwhile, in ... nearby Netherlands:

The Hague appeals court ruled last week that the man’s religious requirement was more important than the law,...http://www.jewishpress.com/news/breaking-news/court-clears-orthodox-jew-for-not-carrying-id-on-sabbath/2012/02/21/

Maybe the Dutch judges have picked up their double standards from reading Chit-Chat too much.

...Or from being neighbors of The International Court of Justice (commonly referred to as the World Court or ICJ) in The Hague:

After the court ruled that the U.S.'s covert war against Nicaragua was in violation of international law (Nicaragua v. United States), the United States withdrew from compulsory jurisdiction in 1986. The United States accepts the court's jurisdiction only on a case-by-case basis. (Wiki)
