Gutachten zur Facharbeit Audio Engineer Course SAE Hamburg: Willem van den Bos Theme: Underwater Acoustics - with a Focus on Underwater Reverb Spaces Under Different Surface Conditions
With his outstanding and marvelous diploma thesis about underwater acoustics, Willem van den Bos gives a wonderful example of experimental electro-acoustics with a profound discussion of the measured environments. The author performed several experimental underwater recordings of various sound sources, like click frogs, ship's bells and sine sweeps, did hard work under tough environmental conditions in two different lakes in northern Germany, utilizing cell phones and walkie-talkies in order to measure the speed of sound underwater. The thesis is very informative and, despite its outstanding academical niveau and formal correctness, great fun to read. Also, it's very interesting from the audio artist's point of view, since it deals with underwater sound scapes and underwater reverberation rooms, that can be sampled for a convolution type reverberation algorithm. The thesis has been written in perfect English, although the courses had been held in German. The work clearly documents the extraordinary expertise of the author in terms of scientific English writing as well as in electro-acoustics.
