EMPLOYMENT TO DATE:
|
December 2008 – Present
Freelance translator, editor and proofreader trading under the name AF Language Services. I specialise in financial translation, but I also have significant experience dealing with marketing, sporting, technical and general texts.
December 2008 – Present
Part-time translator / news analyst for Ignites Europe, a Financial Times news service covering the cross-border retail fund industry in Europe. I write stories on the asset management and mutual fund sector in Europe, sourcing information from French, Italian and English-language media outlets.
November 2005 – December 2008
Translator/Senior Translator at the Financial Times. I translated business and finance articles from Italian, French and Spanish newspapers, including technical articles on the collective investment fund industry, and was the lead Italian translator. The role also involved editing articles written in English by non-native speakers, and training new starters. I was responsible for maintaining the Italian glossary and company database. As part of the job, I attended basic accounting and financial markets courses. In September 2007, I was made Senior Translator in acknowledgement of the quality of my work.
September 2004 – November 2005
Internal Reviser at Wordbank, a marketing communications localisation specialist. In this role, I checked the quality, consistency and accuracy of translations in many different languages. I was also required to edit and proofread translations where English was the target language. Close attention to detail was vital to the job.
April 2004
Translator/Editor for the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. This work placement gave me a fantastic opportunity to work for one of the major European institutions, and I was handed a wide variety of editing and translating work. I also completed an intensive TRADOS training course.

Second degree (2003-4):

I have an MA qualification in Translation and Professional Language Skills from the University of Bath, during which I mainly translated from French and Italian.
The primary focus of the course was translation, but many other written skills were developed:
-
Editing – covering journalistic, technical, financial and political texts from sources such as the EU and the ECB;
-
Revision – of similar texts, and also of speeches made to the European Parliament;
-
Proofreading – a wide range of texts, including newspaper articles, institutional documents and commercial brochures;
There was also a liaison interpreting module which focused on a wide range of day-to-day and business scenarios, as well as intensive beginners’ courses in Dutch and Portuguese.
|
|
First degree (1999-2003):
|
BA (Hons) French and ab initio Italian from the University of Bath. High 2:1 classification. As well as the two languages, political and cultural aspects of France and Italy were studied in depth. Throughout the course, there was also a European Studies module that included work on the major institutions of the EU. Translation was a core unit for three of the four years.
