2000 to present Translator
Rates: Translation: 0.13/word Proofreading: 0.0083/word (US Dollars)
I have translated numerous texts for the Transatlantik-Institut, a college in Ludwigshafen, Germany, for this institute’s director and for other members of its staff. Essentially I have been the translator for this academic institute's Director/Dean, Gerhard Raab (translating into English his textbooks, and an ongoing series of essays arising out of a long term research project of his involving consumer addiction). I also worked for some time for German fashion designer and writer Beatrice Franz, translating script drafts and correspondence. This work involves a very precise focus on detail, working on a computer with a word processor, typing, proofreading, editing, doing extensive research in books and on the Internet, and entails the need to competently engage in professional and cordial correspondence with customers, and to be my own accountant.
May 1998 to Dec 2002 Berlitz School of Languages, Stuttgart, Germany
I taught English mostly to professionals, and as a contract teacher at the school was also trained in administrative duties, which included having to learn how to operate their administrative software. This occupation, taken together with my learning German at the same time, resulted in my developing a very thorough knowledge of grammar. A letter of reference from my director at Berlitz, Anne-Marie Noonan, is available upon request.
Present Fiction Writer
I am a published writer of fiction. Publications where my work has appeared include The Stuttgart Review, Ballista Magazine, Shelter of Daylight. Further work of mine is slated to be published shortly by Sam's Dot Publishing. For the past four years or so I have been in a professional writers' group, The Wired Monks, where we share, proofread, and critique each other's work. Since 2002 I have worked as a writer with filmmaker Chris Spencer Lowe; our current project, which we have recently been awarded funding for by the Nova Scotia provincial government, has the working title Transfer. On a temp contract basis I work for Silverback Games as a writing consultant. My writing blog: http://theinfinitelivingroom.com/
My education has been and ongoingly is eclectic and unorthodox. I took the King's Foundation Year Program in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, studied English Literature both at Dalhousie (Halifax) and at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, where my marks floated in the A range; and I have studied for three Summer programs in the Buddhist University at Dhagpo Kadgyu Ling, a Tibetan settlement in Southern France (not far from where I was living and working in Stuttgart) where I studied Buddhist epistemology, phenomenology, perception theory, and compassionate community living. I have also studied with many different Buddhist teachers in various settings in Canada and in Germany, and also have many years experience studying and practicing Asian martial and meditation arts. I am a chronic reader, well read in many subjects, particularly in continental philosophy, psychology, and literature.
