Are swear-words still really swear-words?

It is TCT Question www.translatorscafe.com/tcterms/EN/thQuestion.aspx that makes me wonder. Are swear-words still swear-words or are they just "ornaments", kinda? Not just Russian or English, any language...

Not quite sure whether it`s linguistics or sociolinguistics or sociometrics or just psychology, though.

Broadening the scope of this inquiry to include slurs:

A history of American political slurs

From "snollygoster" to "latte liberal," partisan insults have evolved with the times. Here are some of the best

  • A history of American political slurs

This slide show is excerpted from the new book, "Slinging Mud: Rude Nicknames, Scurrilous Slogans, and Insulting Slang from Two Centuries of American Politics," available on September 6 from Penguin.

Pundits in recent years have taken to bemoaning the loss of civility in public discourse, apparently under the impression that the political campaigns of earlier eras were conducted with utmost courtesy and decorum. Actually, mudslinging is a venerable American tradition, on a par with baseball and apple pie. Politicians have been going negative since the days of the Founding Fathers. Are swear-words still really swear-words?

Not everywhere.

A German company has won its court battle to register the F-word as a trademark. The brand name of its "Ficken" schnapps will now enjoy legal protection. The term may be in poor taste, but it may soon be used to market spirits and other drinks. http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/0,1518,786190,00.html

Effluency, a portmanteau of effluent and fluency, is a nice touch (NOAD2 on effluent: ‘liquid waste or sewage discharched into a river or the sea’ ) — a genuinely dirty word. Oh, @*#☆! indeed.
