communication before, during and after job completion, and
special scheduling when necessary (overnight in urgent cases,
week-ends, holidays).  A freelancer's flexibility and freedom of
using expertise to best suit your requirements is a definite
               advantage for the client!

Average daily output: 2500 words depending on level of complexity of source text.
This includes the necessary steps of research where required, and
several stages of revision and proofreading.

Background

Work Experience:
• Experienced translator and revisor with regular clients in Canada and abroad.  Work has included non-classified material for the Department of National Defence, Human Resources (HRDC), project descriptions of a scientific and general nature, medical reports for insurance purposes,inter-company communication, etc.  Translation requests for specialized areas beyond my expertise have never been accepted.
• Certified translations of birth, death, marriage certificates, drivers' licenses, etc.  (French and German to English). In Canada, the ATIO certification stamp is recognized as the equivalent of a notary public's certification of the authenticity of the translation.  It does not, however, attest to the trueness of the source document.
• Since 1998, co-marker of the CTTIC   certification exams (German to English)
• Since 1997, instructor for CTTIC preparatory course for the certification exam (French to English and German to English)

Education:

z ATIO certification German to English, French to English
z Equivalency to translation degree recognised by ATIO
z B.A. with honours, double major in German and “français” (for French-speaking
        Canadians), Laurentian University, Sudbury, Canada
z Formal studies in Translation & Interpretation Programme, Laurentian University,
        Sudbury, Canada
z B.Ed, with special training in language teaching, University of Ottawa, Ottawa,
        Canada

Professional aims:

z To provide top quality professional translations that accurately reflect the original document in terms of content, style and tone
zClient-oriented service: your deadlines, specific needs and requirements are always kept in mind; responsiveness and availability throughout and after the translation process
z Thorough research is undertaken before translating any specialised texts as required.
z Revisions keep in mind accuracy of translation, appropriateness of terms in keeping with context, correctness of target language, readability

Literary texts: A special note should be added about literary texts, which require a very different handling from that of technical documents.  My special strength lies in the ability to creatively reflect the original author’s intent, style and atmosphere while maintaining a faithful translation of the source text.

A quotation:

Translators are language professionals.  .. They render into one language texts written in another, with no change in content, tone or style of the message… Among other requirements, translators must be skilled in the use of documentary and language resources to ensure that the terminology used is accurate and consistent, the vocabulary and nomenclature comply with accepted usage in the field in question, and the language register and style reflect the geographic and social contexts in which the source text was written.”
“..a sense of style, mastery of idiomatic phrases and an understanding of implications – what is written between the lines – all ensure that a translation reads as if it were written in the target language.  This is the greatest challenge.. especially when the author’s voice is intimately linked to the cultural context in which he or she is writing.”
