A menopausa é um processo natural, determinado sobretudo por mecanismos genéticos, e traduz-se na ausência de menstruação em consequência da paragem de funcionamento do ovário.
Os primeiros sinais são os atrasos menstruais e os afrontamentos e a menopausa ocorre, em média, aos 50 anos, sendo que a maior parte dos casos acontece entre os 47 e os 52 anos.
Os sintomas mais frequentes são os calores, os afrontamentos e os suores nocturnos.
A mulher sente uma onda de calor que a invade desde a cintura até à face; sente um rubor intenso e súbito na face e pescoço, acompanhado de suores profusos.
